1. Get Organized And Set Your Wedding Planning Timetable

First of all — this may sound silly — you need to plan how you’re going to plan. There are a hundred things to arrange, book, and remember leading up to the big day, and having a centralized, organized place to keep all that information will save you a lot of headaches down the line.

You can use physical binders and folders if you’d like, but in the digital age, many people prefer to use an online organizer like Google Drive.

At this stage, you should also set your wedding planning timetable. Since you won’t be able to set the actual wedding date until you’ve made some other major decisions (like choosing a venue), just worry about choosing a wedding “window” for now. What season would you prefer? Are you trying to work around any major holidays or family events? How big is the event going to be, and how long do you think you will need to plan it? Take these things into account as you decide on a range of dates.

2. Envision The “Big Picture”

Next, before you begin making decisions about the details, you want to imagine the overall feeling and setting of your ideal wedding. Do you want a beachy barefoot ceremony in a tropical location? A small, intimate ceremony deep in the mountains? A candlelit affair in a sweeping, spacious banquet hall?

Ask yourself big-picture questions on what you want from your wedding:

  • Lots of guests or just close friends and family?
  • Local or destination?
  • Rustic, romantic, classic, or glam?
  • Separate wedding reception venue?

If you aren’t sure, start browsing Pinterest, magazines, blogs, forums, and social media for wedding inspiration. When something catches your eye or speaks to you in some way, save the link in your Google Drive!

3. Pick A Few Wedding Venue Options

Once you understand your overall wedding vision, you can start looking for venues to match it. As you browse venue options, you may spark new ideas and your vision for your dream wedding may change. That’s okay!

Get a short list (maybe three or four options) of wedding venues that you’re interested in, but make sure not to book a date before you’ve set your overall budget. In our next blog in the series, we’ll talk about what that looks like!
